Job SummaryInitiates office operations, supervises appropriate Office Medical Assistant care and staffing needs. Provides appropriate Medical Assistant care to patients following established standards and practices. Assists physicians and nurses in the ambulatory setting. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.Minimum QualificationsEducation/TrainingHigh school graduate or equivalent GED. Completion of a Medical Assistant Program required. Phlebotomy training/certification preferred.ExperienceTwo years of experience in a health care setting, preferably in an outpatient setting. One year of supervisory experience preferred.License/Certification/RegistrationCertification by an Accredited Professional Organization, i.e. National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) required. CPR certification required.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and as directed.Skill in taking vital signs maintaining records and recording results.Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patient, medical staff and the public.Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written instructions.Ability to communicate clearly.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical: Performs the clinical duties for the patients, in accordance with practice standards, following established policies/procedures.Assists physicians, and nurses with procedures and treatments as directed. Accompanies patient to other areas as directed and assists in meeting patients' needs for comfort and hygiene. Prepared and ready to assist physicians and nurses with procedures as directed.Enters clinical information into the appropriate patient chart including, but not limited to, vitals, consents,patient reported pain score, learning needs and barriers, medications, allergies, history, as required and/or directed.Labels and maintains proper storage for specimens and tests. Delivers test and obtains results. Laboratory specimens are properly prepared, labeled and stored.Performs quality control functions for assigned area, as directed. Reviews medical records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring entries are signed and legible.Adhering to departmental policies and procedures, will access a patient's medical record / electronic health record (MR/EHR), for work related activities only, to complete proper patient documentation in the health record or to view needed information in the patient chart as necessitated by job role or function. Adheres to most current work flows or processes developed within specific Practice.Clerical: Supports work of the department by performing clerical duties and other support functions.Initiates Clinical office operations and assists physicians with a wide range of healthcare services and procedures. Assists nurse with daily supervision of the support staff for the clinical area to ensure the smooth operation of the office.Coordinates work flow, establishes schedules in the clinical area. Ensures smooth and effective services. Provides backup coverage as necessary.Performs personnel management functions for the clinical area to include, but not limited to: interviewing, scheduling, coaching, counseling and evaluating employees as delegated by or with Supervisor's approval.Customer Focus: Assists with processing patients and preparing all specimens and samples for transportation and testing.Schedules patients for diagnostic tests, keeps record of the same, and instructs patients on any preparation necessary for their procedures both verbally and by giving appropriate patient information sheets as appropriate.Performs follow-up calls to patients regarding post-visit/post-procedure status. Records and documents all appropriate information in the appropriate IT systems and communicates to physician and/or nurse. Assists in scheduling of tests, appointments as directed.Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure.Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs.Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain licensure and certification.Attends MedStar Health and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center sponsored training programs as required by the department.Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (License, PPD, Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.)5.Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments.Maintains awareness of changes in procedures or protocols.Attends department meetings as required or reads/initials meeting minutes within the specified time frame if not in attendance.Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriateProvides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.Department/Unit Specific Functions and DutiesAssist Nurse Manager with orienting and training of Medical Assistants on daily duties.Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
