Job Summary
Performs a variety of patient care related activities to assist physicians, physician extenders and nursing staff in the ambulatory setting.Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent GED. Completion on Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant course strongly preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Phlebotomy training/certification preferred. CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.Experience
6 months experience in health care setting, preferably an outpatient setting. Experience with electronic health records preferred.License/Certification/Registration
Certification by an Accredited Professional Organization, i.e. National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) preferred. If not certified at the date of hire must become certified within six months of hire date. CPR certification required.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and as directed. Skill in taking vital signs maintaining records and recording results. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patient, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly.Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physical examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Takes vital signs and assists patients in patient flow through the clinic.
  • Prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing. Stocks supplies. Sterilizes instruments.
  • Uses electronic systems to access and enter information as directed such as EMR, practice management IT systems and supply ordering protocols.
  • Enters clinical information into the appropriate patient chart including, but not limited to, vitals, consents, patient reported pain scores learning needs and barriers, medications, allergies, history, as required and/or directed.
  • Assists physicians, physician extenders and nurses with procedures and treatments as directed. Draws blood. Prepared and ready to assist physicians and nurses with procedures as directed.
  • Labels and maintains proper storage for specimens and tests. Delivers test and obtains results. Laboratory specimens are properly prepared, labeled and stored.
  • Accompanies patient to other areas as directed and assists in meeting patients needs for comfort and hygiene.
  • Performs quality control functions for assigned area, as directed. Reviews medical records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring entries are signed and legible.
  • Performs follow-up calls to patients regarding post-visit/post-procedure status. Records and documents all appropriate information in the appropriate IT systems and communicates to physician and/or nurse. Assists in scheduling of tests, appointments as directed.
  • Schedules patients for diagnostic tests, keeps record of the same, and instructs patients on any preparation necessary for their procedures both verbally and by giving appropriate patient information sheets.
  • Performs other duties such as calling in prescriptions, assisting patients in making appointments with consulting physicians and arranging emergent hospital admissions from the clinic setting.
  • Adhering to GPG and departmental policies and procedures, will access a patient's medical record / electronic health record (MR/EHR), for work related activities only, to complete proper patient documentation in the health record or to view needed information in the patient chart as necessitated by job role or function. Adheres to most current work flows or processes developed within GPG or specific Practice.
  • Provides educational information to patients as directed.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
