Job Summary
Assesses, plans, administers and evaluates patients receiving all
modalities of respiratory care. Defined duties are performed in
neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations in general care,
intermediate, intensive and emergency care areas.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Training
Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Experience
Minimum 1 year of experience in an acute care setting is
preferred
License/Certification/Registration
RRT Certification via NBRC
CPR Certification
Maryland Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
Basic Computer skills to perform Data entry
HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical: Assesses, plans, administers and evaluates patients
receiving all modalities of respiratory care.
Provides invasive and non-invasive support and management of the
critical care patient. Set up and operate such devices.
Provides emergency care, including artificial respiration, external
cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary
resuscitation.
Determine requirements for treatments for treatment, such as type,
method and duration of therapy, precautions, medication and
dosages, working closely with medical staff. Work as part of a team
of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to manage
patient care.
Monitor patients physiological responses to therapy, such as vital
signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes and
consult with physician if adverse reactions occur.
Documentation of all treatment modalities, observations and
improvements in all areas of respiratory care. Maintains medical
record that contains patients pertinent identification and therapy
information.
Performs diagnostic testing: electrocardiograms, bedside pulmonary
screenings, ABGs, arterial line insertions, oxygen saturation
studies and respiratory care evaluations to aide in patient
management.
Performs chest physiotherapy to promote bronchial hygiene and
assist or instruct patients in performance of breathing
exercises.
Performs nasal, oral, pharyngeal, endotrcheal and tracheotomy
suctioning to maintain patients airways.
Instructs patients and staff in the use and infection control of
all respiratory equipment.
Provides respiratory critical care in-service teaching to nurses
and physicians.
Educates patients and their families about their condition and
teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing
exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
Instructs and ensures patient knowledge of their pulmonary disease
process.
Performs oxygen therapy, oxygen saturation studies and rounds each
shift utilizing oxygen protocol.
Inspects, cleans, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment
to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering
repairs when necessary.
Environmental: Maintains a clean, safe, prepared work
environment.
Cleans and processes all equipment for sterilizes.
Restocks and requests supplies that have dwindled
Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and
licensure.
Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address
these education needs.
Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain
licensure in Maryland.
Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the
department
Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure
within allotted timeframe for completion (CPR, License, PPD,
Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.)
Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between
departments.
Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees,
communicating unit knowledge as appropriate
Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired
during participation with interdepartmental teams and
committees.
Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with
staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the
unit.
Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties
Oversees and organizes orientation for respiratory care procedures
to students, trainees, new employees and other health care
personnel.
