Job Summary Working directly with patients, this is a technical position responsible for providing clerical and clinical support to the physicians and other licensed healthcare providers in physicians# offices. This position involves will greet patients, help to answer/screen phone calls, organize and prepare patients for diagnosis and treatment by physicians and other providers. Minimum Qualifications Education/Training High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of Medical Assistant program is required. # Experience Minimum 2 yrs experience in medical practice. # License/Certification/Registration Certified as a Medical Assistant is required from two credentialing organizations; American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). # Knowledge, Skills # Abilities Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. Moderate Computer skills to perform Data entry and specimen verification. Experience with computerized clinical information systems preferred. HIPAA policies on Confidentiality. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Clinical: Performs the clinical duties for the patients, in accordance with practice standards, following established policies/procedures. Greets each patient and family member(s) in a courteous manner. Screens patients and documents information accurately in patient charts. Escorts patients to treatment rooms and properly instructs patients and prepares patients with clear instructions for physicians. Screens patients, including taking vital signs accurately and documents in accordance with policies. Prepares patients for physicians and healthcare providers. Assists Physician in office medical procedures. Ensures each patient room is prepared for each visit, to include properly stocked with equipment, chart, and supplies. Provides assistance to physicians and medical staff in the treatment or procedures. Educates patient and family member(s) about the visit/procedure to be performed. Performs correct patient identification for accurate labeling, collection, and processing of laboratory specimens. Performs all specimen collection techniques accurately and according to all SOP#s, including verification of correct collection tubes and/or containers. Provides all proper discharge and follow up instructions. Adheres to all safety protocols including standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, and other infection control policies. Is able to work efficiently and organize work during heavy workload situations to expedite patient throughput. Clerical: Supports work of the department by performing clerical duties and other support functions. Greets all patients and visitors in a prompt and professional manner, displaying good customer service skills. Responds to all inquiries (in person or over the telephone) from patients, visitors, and other hospital or medical personnel, referring non-routine questions to appropriate person or supervisor. Provides testing order information to physician office personnel when indicated, referring any problems directly to the Supervisor. Applies the proper procedures for processing of different insurances for entering outpatient orders. Maintains current standing orders current and enters them into appropriate reference laboratory computer system. Keeps laboratory requisitions filed and up-to-date by making every effort to complete the filing generated on his/her shift Is able to locate and retrieve information from the files as requested. May function as a Medical Receptionist to include; answering phones, filing, scheduling appointments, insurance verification and other duties as assigned. Must be able to travel between offices. Customer Focus: Assists with processing patients and preparing all specimens and samples for transportation and testing. Prepares samples to be sent to proper reference laboratory according to specific reference laboratory protocol. Completes reference laboratory request form and packaging slips with all pertinent information such as name, sex, age, doctor, billing, codes, tests, etc. Ensures all tests are sent to reference laboratory with the correct transport conditions/temperature. Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (License, PPD, Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.) Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments. Maintains awareness of changes in procedures or protocols. Attends department meetings as required or reads/initials meeting minutes within the specified time frame if not in attendance. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Maintains knowledge of Georgetown and MedStar policies and procedures. Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties Assists with inventory management, stocks blood collection area, and rotates stock using older stock first. Cleans and sanitizes blood collection and processing areas. Maintains clean waiting room and front office areas. Informs clients of estimated wait times for their procedures when indicated. Transports STAT specimens to the main hospital laboratory when requested.#
