Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARYPerforms basic, routine and specialized tasks in the Maternal Newborn Center, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Assists with in room preoperative and intra-operative preparation of patients and assists with set up of the surgical suite before, during and after a surgical procedure under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESClinical: Performs basic, routine and specialized tasks in assigned department, under the supervision of a registered nurse When scrubbing in a case appropriate hand washing and sterilization techniques are followed. Prepares equipment and surgical table for procedure Provides assistance in moving patient from stretcher to surgical table and back. Prepares and helps with patient positioning. Observes, monitors, and reports changes in patient's condition, symptom, reactions or behavior as appropriate. Provides support during intrapartal and neonatal procedures that may require surgical skills, instruments, and equipment Prepares OR for operative cases, including infant resuscitation equipment. Acts as scrub assistant during OR surgical procedures. Meets patients' needs (to include providing baths, linen changes, bedpans, water pitchers, etc.) Assists with ambulation, positioning, elimination, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, routine comfort measures. Provides nourishments as requested and authorized by orders, including distribution and collection of meal trays as needed. Participates in shift report, reports observations, and any change in status to RN. Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services to them Assists in vaginal deliveries as needed Prepares instruments, supplies, and equipment for physicals, circumcisions, and other procedures as needed Environmental: Maintains a clean, safe, organized work environment Prepares patient rooms for admissions. Counts sterile instruments/sets at the beginning of each shift, orders necessary supplies to maintain par levels, etc. Breaks down LDR's, OR, and Nursery treatment areas immediately after procedures are completed including the collection, removal and appropriate disposal of dirty linen, trash, body fluids, and contaminated instruments Distributes supplies to designated storage areas when they are delivered to unit Checks par levels of supplies and restocks as needed. Maintains utility, storage, nourishment and nursing station areas orderly at the end of each shift. Checks sterile supplies for sterility integrity, where applicable Prepares sterile equipment and surgical table for procedure. Assists with the cleaning and sterilization of Labor and Delivery OR for case turnover Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain certification. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (CPR, License, PPD, Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.) Meets all mandatory obligations Administrative: Assists in the timely collection and accurate reporting of patient data Observes, monitors and records vital signs and nursing care procedures on the indicated section of the patient care flowsheet. Assures that documentation is accurate. Assist with other administrative duties as assigned. Keep log book up to date Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.
