The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for the daily care of research animals with focus on aquatic facilities. Performing general animal husbandry and technical functions in support of research studies utilizing aquatic models. Feed adults, juveniles and fry. Split fry into appropriate numbers for maturity. Tank and rack sanitation. Changing of tanks, as needed. Weekly testing of water purity. Checking of conductivity and necessary support for tasks. Timely reporting of sick and dead fish to Veterinary and Lab staff. Euthanasia as outlined in the IACUC-approved animal protocol. Maintenance of filters for standalone rack and/or filter changes. Macroenvironment cleaning (decon, floor mopping, etc. as per AAALAC/ACUC requirements). Monitoring of environmental parameters (temperature, humidity). Maintain stock supplies in the animal room including but not limited to, tanks, feed, and any requisite personal protective equipment. Maintain up to date accurate records of all activities and communicate same to laboratory personnel. Responsible for natural mating for colony maintenance. Embryo care and transfer to rack system. Maintaining records. Restocking of clean tanks, screens, and breeding material for setting up crosses. Perform basic maintenance on the systems and troubleshoot pumps, pipes, water supply, and system as a whole. Work schedule will include weekend and holiday hours. Other Duties as assigned. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: Possession of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or work experience in laboratory animal medicine with Certificate or other educational experience. No work experience required with a bachelor's degree. Ability to keep detailed records and maintain experimental data in a computer-based application/database. Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and basic requirements for maintaining and scientific procedures in animal testing and data collection. Must possess basic Microsoft Office skills. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: Ability to multi-task. Eagerness to learn new skills. Excellent organization and observation skills. Job Hazards This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance. The salary range posted is a full-time equivalent salary and will vary depending on scheduled hours for part time positions
